Cockroaches.
Cockroaches living in our homes can create health issues for humans.
They often dwell in environments that support the growth and development of harmful diseases for humans.
Cockroaches are known to cause:
- salmonella food poisoning, and
- asthma
Cockroaches leave waste on pretty much everything they come in contact with including your kitchen utensils.
If the infestation is fairly large, you’ll also smell a pungent, very unpleasant odour due to their waste.
If you see one cockroach, there are likely to be many more hiding in your home.
Cockroach management is a combination approach and includes:
- Comprehensive inspection of the property
- High standard of sanitary conditions (homeowner’s responsibility) to reduce food sources along with water sources and areas where they can reside
- The correct application of pesticides to control the population
- Follow up inspections and monitoring if required.
Cockroach life cycle.
The life cycle depends on their species and the climate they are in.
On average, a female can lay 5-30 egg sacks which can contain up to 40 eggs.
Once the eggs hatch it can take as little as 2-4 months for the cockroaches to become mature and start to produce their own egg sacks. Thus, quick infestation is a real issue.
A treatment plan must be carried is essential to prevent infestation.
Areas of infestation.
Most wet areas in a home or commercial business are at risk of cockroach infestations.
Cockroaches typically infest areas in and around homes that provide food and shelter, often preferring more humid and warmer temperatures found in kitchens and laundry areas.
Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal.
During the day they hiding they hide in the cracks and crevices of your home.
You would be surprised where they can squeeze into to find a safe secure location.
What cockroaches eat.
Cockroaches eat virtually anything including what we eat, what our pets eat, dead animals and our garbage.
They will even eat leather, paper, cardboard, fabrics, glue and starchy book bindings.
Cockroach species.
There are almost 4000 species of cockroaches, you will find in your home you will find around six species.
These are the German cockroach, Australian cockroach, American cockroach, Brown banded cockroach and the Smoky brown cockroach.
